Hi all, long time no post
I've got myself a Prelude (very much a fixer-upper, but a proper bucket list car so I'm chuffed to bits).
It's got a slightly smokey 2.2 VTI motor (valve stem seal replacement needed) and the universally-disliked M6HA automatic box which unfortunately has all the issues they're known for.
I've had all the solenoids out of it and cleaned them, also done a fluid change (not too much debris came out). Helped a little bit. This trans seems to have good days and bad, thing I don't get is it doesn't always do any of these things, just sometimes, which makes me wonder if it's an issue with the control unit or just debris that finds its way into something and then comes out again?
Problems are:
- Flares going from 2nd-3rd and 3rd-4th, sometimes worse than others
- Intermittent slippage in 4th gear - sometimes 4th disappears completely, i'll tap the solenoids and sometimes this brings it back, but the solenoids worked as they should when i bench tested them so not sure if this is the issue?
It also used to shift really lazily in every gear but I took the clutch pressure control block off and cleaned out the little tubes, it now shifts a bit nicer.
Questions:
- How much would I be looking at approximately for someone to go through it and rebuild what needs rebuilding?
- Is this conceivably a DIY project - I've rebuilt engines before but never gearboxes - is this something I could do myself and where do I get the bits?
- Any more things I could try? One thing I haven't got round to yet is continuity and voltage checks at the solenoids whilst going through the gears to make sure the right signals are actually getting through
Was considering just manual swapping it but honestly not sure if it'd make more sense to just fix this transmission or get a good low mileage used one.
Thank you
