Homemade flat belt.

A bit of nylon webbing stitched into a loop to make a belt. (The large pulley was also quickly made from a knackered gear turned smooth)

I had trouble getting accurate holes in a brass part yesterday with a hand drill and I wondered if this would be any easier (Of course the answer is yes).

It probably won't last too long but I felt it worth sharing in case it anyone needs a random sized belt fast while a proper one is delivered.

No, I couldn't be bothered to grind a big radius tool or figure out how to use a graver safely so I left it flat. It hangs slightly off the upper edge of the wheel which I think has a similar effect.

If you want concave use a half round round file and if you want convex use a flat file and form it by hand...with great caution on a lathe of course, must have a handle, safe grip and no sleeves or gloves etc

I didn't think of that, good idea.

I would do it but It's a bit of a PITA to switch between using my lathe and the drill as I only have one inverter so I have to disconnect the lathe and wire up the drill each, I need a three phase selector switch (Or another inverter).

I have a 4 pin 3 phase socket (red) on my inverter and each of my machines has a matching plug.
It's a cheap solution to swapping machines.

im lucky in the fact i can make belts at work, also unfortunate i have nothing that needs any (yet)

A crowned pulley need not be rounded nor evenly-shaped. Flat flanks and a rounded point will do the same job.
