Hole in Tufnol breakout chips?

I need a carb spacer for my bike. I used to cut out Tufnol carb spacers quiet often, so I dug in my
crap cabinet and found a bit of 10mm Tufnol just big enough for a spacer. Not sure it is a left over from
making spacers. I used to drill a 5/16 hole and cut out the carb holes with a coping saw or holesaw. I
can't remember ever having break out chips. The stuff I have just used has chipped really badly on all the
through holes. It also looks light brown on a sawn cut, I am pretty sure the stuff I used looked the same
on the faces and sawn cut's.
I have just looked and you can buy different grades, Have I got a carp grade?

There are a couple of types of Tufnol called Crow brand and Kite brand, one is resin impregnated linen and the other resin impregnated paper, Its the paper grade that tends to flake around any cut areas, The paper grade is dark brown and the linen one much lighter brown and the linen weave can be seen on the surface,

Plenty of info on the Tufnol website, The woven linen type is more flexible and less likely to snap when using the thinner gauges,We also used tubular Tufnol quite a lot for insulating purposes on turbine/alternator bolts and studs etc.

are u using the spacers to move the-carbs further back or just- as heat insulators. if moving -back just make them out of alloy

Well whats a few chips, I will stick the spacer on with lashings of ketchup[Wellseal].

Yep the spacer is to move the carb back, one of the screws for the top[slide top] hits the rockerbox. I did
consider ali but I have always made them from Tufnol in the past. If 10mm is not enough I will make an ali
spacer, Lets hope 10mm is enough as I have just made the new studs and they are just right for +10mm.


I just splurged on a new carb, even if I had known it wouldn't fit I doubt I would let any more of the
dosh in my wallet see the light of day and bought a spacer;-) Not sure I have ever seen a new Concentric before.
I might have to take some photos of it.

id say eather drill through with a mutch smaller drill bit as a gide and then drill half way in from eather side with the size your after or can you clamp it down to a bit of hard wood or aly to stop brake out. May be a lip and spur bit might do the job

I had this issue drilling a gear, overcome by sandwiching between two pieces of wood and clamping. Produced clean holes.
