HOLBROOK LATHE I THINK IT IS A 3G VERY OLD | eBay

ABOUT 1940S THE MOTOR ON THIS LATHE DOES NOT SEEM TO WORK ANY MORE IT DID WHEN I FIRST HAD IT ABOUT 15 YEARS AGO, I HAVE NOT USE IT SINCE. NO BUYIT NOW.

Lathe is on ebay just down the road. Looks like a basic T series? With gap bed? Never knew Holbrook did a gap bed. It has a couple of chucks, but thats it. Rusty bed, not running, but simple? Question is, do I bid on it with a view to replacing my Triumph round top (with a worn bed)?

worth a punt if the price stays low, local makes a big difference, especially if it may not be all that good!

If the price is right and you know how to dismantle, refurbish and rebuild a lathe then why not

At least if you do buy it you could keep the triumph running till you get this Holbrook working and make any bits you need so won't be stuck without a lathe?.

Nice machine. It's the case of do you want to restore it because it will most probably need it and can you justify the time and cost to do so.

Discussion on Holbrook forum is its probably a G13 probably late 20's / early 30's (the number stamped on the end of the bed at tailstock end, will give a more clear indication)
G is for General ..so not tool room
Pretty rare survivor
Why not go and have a close look at it, if it's local you could asses then how good or bad it is and what may or may not need doing ?

That explains why it has a gap bed. Not so much better than my triumph then...
I don't need it especially, certainly don't have space for it right now, but.....

But....its a Holbrook and ya want it..there is another really nice old Holbrook on ebay I really like. It was posted on the forum.....

I'm in the camp of don't buy it if you don't need it unless you want a big project and have big spare time to spend. It'll just end up being a rusty obstruction IMO.

It’s workmanship is second to none
90 years ago before animals had been at it the accuracy would have been superb

It’s now out of tolerance, heavy to use and poor speeds , no reverse and will seriously annoy if your only lathe

I have a immaculate t13
I only use it occasionally on super accuracy jobs and making lathe screws because it can produce threads with a better than oe pitch error . But for everyday work no thanks!

Yes indeed yours is a very fine example. Hopefully when things can down I can get round to restoring mine.

Sorry, I posted that last reply earlier today, but it was too soon after the previous one so got trapped.
Anyway, appreciate all the replies. I don't need this Holbrook, it doesn't do half of what my Triumph does, but I appreciate that some stuff it could do better.
We'll see.
