I've used cut up propane bottles as both an anode & tank before, works well and very easy. That was using a heavy transformer based battery charger that supplied many amps and did a decent job of heating the solution too.
I'm using a transformer start-n-charge a mate gave me Some Years Ago, I've limited it to 16 amps by wiring an MCB in the AC side of the bridge rectifier, seems plenty and trips if I short things out (better than trying to find somewhere that sells fuses on a Sunday evening) - I've seen DC TIC welders used as a power source, but he was dunking and entire truck cab... 200 amps and about 100 feet of rebar, steaming inside an hour!
