I think that would be more likely to get damaged in transit if shipped via courier than to have anything actually wrong with it in the first place. (Speaking from experience having sensitive equipment shipped, no orig packing available and seller doesn’t understand what’s needed and how brutal couriers are.) If the original packing isn’t available there’s a lot of work in crating that and the manufacturer would have shipped it with transit fixings to stop the mechanism losing timing with jolts.

Quickest easiest way to lose money!
If you or someone you know can’t get in the car and see it in person then leave it for someone that can.
Photos, videos, calls and texts can all be messed with to make you believe it’s a runner. I wouldn’t ever hand 2k over to someone I didn’t know for something I’ve never seen. That’s just crackers

No you aren't! Using a third party processor destroys Section 75 CCA protection.

In follow up, I've just been doing some reading, and it seems you're right in most cases. But also that a load of the other ones also somtimes, but not always (and it seems PayPal does not always either???) behave in the same way. Even "invisible" third party loopholes.

Article said that chargeback should still work on all. But I wouldn't trust a credit card company to do anything that they were not legally forced to...

That looks like a straight stitch machine, the other one is computerised and will do fancy stuff like embroidery. I would make an effort to get a look at it if I really wanted it otherwise forget about it. I would want to pick it up anyway not leave it in the hands of a courier.

£2k is worth travelling for, both to see condition, and to make sure payment for goods received actually happens. It's one of my life rules. More than £500 = roadtrip, unless buying brand new from a decent size business.

How are you gonna pay for it otherwise? Paypal? They'll just laugh at you! It'll have to be cash or bank transfer.

Only once have I not done this - was a tractor that I couldn't collect myself. Still drove the 7 hours to see it and check it over and satisfy myself that the seller was genuine, and arranged for transport seperately.

I had my eye on a new generator at a good price on Ebay. They had no feedback so I asked if I could collect one as the address was fairly local. Yes, just pay and collect. I decided to check the address before paying and it turned out to be a park! A complaint to Ebay and the seller was removed. I had the same with a shed at a good price. I found the pictures had been copied from an established shed seller. Apparently Ebay won't take action on things like that and the sheds probably didn't exist. You just have to be a bit canny before parting with your money and look for feedback and make sure the feedback isn't for very low cost items then a big cost item gets listed.

Thank you all especially those that offered to look for me.I really don't think its a scam as the ebay adverts, facebook adverts, personal facebook page and buiness links all tie in.However I think my plan will be to leave it for a few weeks and contact the owner through facebook and make an offer taking into account what ebay and paypal charge for fees.If its accepted then I'll make the journey up to collect subject to machine working correctly.I can fit it in my car as I bought a different machine of similar size before.

For those that are interested the machine is a straight stitch machine and although similar to the other machine posted it has several advantages..... foot lifts a few mm higher, automatic lubrication, the bobbin fits from the top so easier to check amount of thread left, foot height can be adjusted by the knob on the top while sewing,1mm extra stitch length. The control panel allows auto thread cut, auto stitch locking at begining and end of seam, touch button foot height adjustment and other stuff which I have yet to work out.

If you had used one, you would be aware of the frustrations of a standard machine! Extra foot lift allows a thicker bundle of material to be sewn. Automatic lubrication is great because sewing machines are like small steam engines in their lubrication points and regime. The bobbin is hidden in the guts of a standard machine and is typically very small, so having a bigger one easily seen means no more teabag impressions in the material. Adjusting the foot pressure is to accomodate different materials. Lighter materials generally require lower foot pressure so an easy adjustment makes life more convenient. Again stitch length is for different materials and purposes. It can also be helpful for decorative top stitching effects on leather etc.

It sounds like a decent machine to me, I am using an old Seiko walking foot machine with none of those features bar a servo motor I fitted which makes a world of difference.

Update. While uhmming and ahhing about this a similar machine(poss better) came up on ebay near birmingham.So after a bit of a road trip today, two and a half hours each way(300miles), I now own a possibly better machine at the bargain price of £800.

Just want to say that I’m sure it was bargain sewing machines who ripped me off when I bought a Juki from them a few years ago.

His ‘mechanic’ was going to service it, but when it arrived, bits were broken, covers were missing, and basically it wasn’t in a fit working state. I gullibility paid via a bank transfer, as the deal was, if I paid outside ebay/paypal, they would cover the cost of delivery.

And no, they didn’t, nor could I get my money back. I was going to take them through the small claims court, but again, hubby’s health took a turn for the worse, and I had my hands full. Fortunately, I was able to fix it myself, with the help of College Sewing Machines (absolute stars).
