Hello all, just started a 10 week welding course so thought I would sign up to get some advice I have a quick question too, if I wanted to weld 316 stainless could I use a MIG or is a TIG a much better option?

all depends on the application, what do you want to do with stainless?

I was going to attempt to make an exhaust manifold for my turbo : )

Tig would look much nicer, it is posdible to do it with mig but it would not look as nice

Also depends on what you have as a welding unit? All three work on SS. Tig preferred, Mig OK, stick if you are carefull.

I haven't bought a welder yet but was thinking of a Clarke 151.

I MIG stainless using Argishield light and get very pretty welds. I repair my bike exhausts and brackets with it and made up a Landy exhaust.

TIG is beautiful for finish but MIG can be pretty and functional if you takeyour time.
