A friend and myself painted a car bonnet with cellulose paint 3 days ago and today we've wheeled the car outside to do a couple of other jobs on it and after a few hours we've noticed that the paint on the bonnet has gone quite soft and slightly tacky, question is this normal? I know it takes a few weeks for the paint to cure so is this just the chemicals working their way through to the surface and evaporating? Any tips or advice would be great guys.

I do bits of painting on motorbike bodywork, I use acrylics. I am not 100% on cellulose, but I always thought it needed to be baked dry. This might be the issue, however it could be the temp at the moment, as a fuel tank I painted last week has gone like rubber after being flatted and buffed. I think leave it for a few days and see how it goes.

Definetly should be dry buy know, when its warm it only takes a few minutes to be touch dry. What did you paint over and did you finish with a clear coat ?
Thanks for your replys guys. Its definetly cellulose and we didn't put a clear coat on it. While it was off the car this morning I sent feel slightly tacky or anything but since fiting it and it baking in the sun it seems to have gone a bit soft and insure if you out a little pressure on it it would leave a fingerprint in the paint. We've actually paintd the whole car and it only seems to be the bonnet that's an issue. Do you think its just the solvent's coming through making it soft?

It's not normal and something is causing the effect other than the cellulose paint.
Cellulose is very fast drying and remains dry, in my 'bash em and botch em' days of my youth, I have sprayed, cut and polished and sold a car in less than 6 hours using celly.... great paint.

I had that problem with some primer a few years ago. I had just sprayed a Bond Bug bodyshell. A week later it was still not hard. It turns out that I had been sold 2k primer as cellulose. Eventually, I was able to topcoat it and it seemed to be no problem, lasting a few years at least.

Talking to a paint supplier at a recent show I overheard someone else asking a similar question - they'd sprayed a car and were having trouble with it not drying. His response was to ask whether they'd sprayed the doors and bonnet off the car - when the chap said 'yes', he said they had probably put too much paint on, because the horizontal nature of the panels lying flat meant that it was tempting to put too much paint on as it didn't run.
I don't know if that was cellulose, or whether the supplier was talking rubbish.

yeah talking rubbish, paint still runs due to the contours of the panels and so on, most people doing it for the first or second time probably don't put enough on and rub or polish through when finishing it off

Agree with talking rubbish, even if you have a panel sitting as flat as possible too much paint would run.
The thing with celly though is if you even had runs within 24 hours they would be hard and not possible to feel sticky and leave fingerprints in them, if you were unfortunate enough to get a run it took wet and dry to flat it back.
If you have used the same paint and thinners on the rest of the car and it is ok then there must be something on the panel.
Car bonnets are the panel that can often be resprayed when the rest of the car has not, due to stone chips, idiots jumping on them etc etc, so what you have painted over may not be the same as the rest of the car.
Hi guys I could do with some more help/information about the above problem. I'll start from the beginning so hopefully it'll be easier to find the cause of the problem. A mate and I spray painted a full car about 3/4 weeks ago and painted the bonnet separate and off the car. We used HMG cellulose at first until we ran out and then had to get some more paint from our local supplier, this wasn't HMG it was mixed onsite and I don't know what manufacturer or mixing scheme they use. I know it isn't wise to mix paints but my mate was in a rush to get it done (that's another story). Anyway we've completed it and the body actually looks OK, it needs flatting and polishing but its OK. The bonnet however still feels soft and you can easily put a finger nail into it and if you try to flat it the paint kind of balls up between the surface and the paper and I've never seem this before. I suspect within the 2 1litre tin we bought from our local supplier one of them wasn't not cellulose and maybe something else 2k? There's a couple of things we don't quite understand though, we used the same paint on the body and that seems OK, could that be because we've painted it straight after spraying cellulose and somehow they've mingled together and dried properly? The bonnet was painted on a separate day and was painted just with one paint which was the one we suspect wasn't cellulose. I know its difficult to diagnose anything like this but what do you guys think would cause the paint to still feel soft still after a 3/4 week drying time? Why would the paint when you try flatting it ball up and roll across the surface? And if you leave your hand on the surface for a min, I wouldn't say it feels tacky but there is a slight stickyness to it? Absolutely any help would be much appreciated as were out of ideas.

It sounds like what I have noticed with coach enamel, but the confusing part is that what you sprayed on the car is fine.
If the bonnet was previously painted with something different, that usually causes a visible reaction rather than what you are experiencing.
Whatever the reason, it's not going to improve and you are now best removing everything back to bare metal. Maybe you will find extra layers of paint when doing that, one of which may be the problem. Then prime up and put your new topcoat on.

Without knowing for certain what you have been spraying with, you are going to be going round in circles, guessing allsorts and probably getting no wiser to the problem.
Strip it off, get some celly from a reputable supplier and respray it..job done and sorted.

if you had stripped the bonnet back to steel and primed with no problems yet the top coat hasn't cured the I would suspect the top coat to be defective, I would remove it, get some cheap celly thinner and wash it off with an old rag and start again with different paint
