Hi all,
Just cleared all the garage out and set up the work shop.I'm building
a hotrod which needs a lot of fab work. I have got a Clarke 160 turbo
mig, which size gas bottle would be best and more enconomical for
me to use.

It always depends on your usage TBH. I use a 10l bottle (137 bar), with fairly low rental, but the gas costs more per litre than say a large BOC bottle.

You normally use about 10l per minute, so that forms the start of your own calculations. There was/is a spreadsheet somewhere on the site that can be used to help work out the best option. If you will be welding loads, a bottle from BOC may be best. Look to see if the volkzone offer is still going as I get the impression it's a good deal.

Welcome along Kicksy.
As Sid says, it depends on your usage, but I have a Y size bottle from BOC for Clarke 151. It has lasted about 10 months so far, but I don't do "that" much welding.
The BOC Volkszone offer has now been closed, but they do say they are looking at a new offer soon. It may be worth looking at a rent free bottle from somewhere like adamsgas.
Have a browse through the shielding gas forum on this site. Lots of information there, along with a spreadshet of gas prices through various suppliers.

Hello Dave, welcome to the forum, a W bottle is the best value for money but a bit big for you to transport, so that leaves the X or Y bottle, I would go with the Y bottle as the X don't last long at all, When you pick up your bits i can give you a quick MIG lesson.
Get Argonshield, please don't use pub gas despite what you may hear.

Oh and get yourself a Flowmeter, it will save you a fortune in gas

even I don't recomend pub gas for a hotrod ok to push car bodywork through an mot ,not for anything on display !...bite the bullet get the argon shield
