is anyone involved in hgv tyre fitting? especially in the southwest/cornwall etc?

im after a legal take off tyre for my spare wheel. a steer or all position 285/70 19.5.

if anyone can get their hands on one id gladly pay shipping. idc how much tread it has as long as its legal.

The 19.5 is very common over here on F-550 trucks and up.
My GMC 3500 hd runs them, although I don't recall the width.
Is the width hard to source ?
Or some other feature ?

its common on hgvs. which is why i hope someone has a tyre taken off because its nearly worn out. i don't want to speed a few hundred buying a spare that i hopefully wont use.

however as i just got reamed by a fitter for a replacement tyre at the side of the road after a puncture, i would like to avoid that in the future.

£300/310 for a good make new one

£168 for a Golden Crown/Double Coin chinese poop ones off the rack here fitted. (Best avoided)

Was selling "Goodtrips" at £163 - but I can't get anymore of them (they were OK for the money).

I might have some Jinyu ones at £260


WE don't see good part worn HGV tyres here ever - they all dead once we take them off. If I had one you could have it... (but I don't)

yeah i can get them at trade new, but i object to paying £300 roadside for a budget tyre, (and i have recovery, so that was just for the tyre, no callout) when i can get the same tyre for 2/3 of that and fit it myself...

Selling commercial tyres is a dying trade - most fleets buy direct and have there own workshops.

It only "up the road out of van" can you earn any money out of the job - as you found out.


I only stock a few cheap ones now and to be honest - I would not care if we never sold another lorry tyre again ever.

well yes, im unlikely to bother with a tyre thats over 10 years, simply because it might be sat waiting to be used for several years. but if i had a steer puncture, and my spare happened to be 11 years old, im definitely going to be fitting it to get me home, and age be damned.

Got to watch the old dvsa man, they seem to be on some sort of performance bonus all round the country these days.

Trick there is to fit them dry, even better if the threads have started to pull, do them up with the gun with way to many ugga duggas then try the torque wrench for a giggle!

I had a little builders two axle tipper in this week for a set of four on the back axle.

Told owner to take it away apply brick acid on the wheel nuts to get concrete off and return it for us to try and remove the wheels.

I kid you not....

No problem getting "runners" around here, normally around sixty quid for a decent brand used tyre. It's the transport to Cornwall that will kill it.

David Cameron changed DVLA, VOSA etc from vehicle licensing and regulatory organisations int “revenue centres” somewhere I have the government brochure on it. Hence they have been on financial targets ever since.
