hf tig torch assy

help me please
would someone be able to tell me where i would get a cheap hf torch assembly for a new arc tig 300 hf.
i am only starting out in tig welding and dont want to spend to much money.

The torch itself does not generate the HF spark that starts the arc.

That is done by the machine itself.

Cheaper Inverter welders are mainly used for MMA ( stick welding ). Some companys offer a Tig option. This is known as "scratch start". Not the best for your Tungstens as it inlvolves scratching the base metal and hoping that you strike an arc and not fuse the tungsten to the base metal!!

Next up is whats called "Lift Start". This applies to the cheaper Tig welders whereby the welder does not apply welding current until you: Touch the tungsten to the metal, press the trigger and then lift off. This strikes the arc.

By far the best is the HF set as found in more expensiver sets - which ARE sold as Tig welders.

From googling 'newarc tig 300' it appears to be an HF 'add on' box, manual here... http://www.newarc.co.uk/admin/scripts/tiny_mce/imgs/TIG300%282012%29_1.pdf which shows a gas through power connection for the torch BUT an option for them to be seperate.

Would have thought any TIG torch that can stand the power you plan to weld with would be fine. If you can't find one with the correct plug for the switch I would bet that only two contacts are being used so either swap the plug or a bit of connector block or couple of but crimps will do the job if you don't plan to take torch off

Torch wise pretty much anything* as said, they're available with various different fittings and 3/8" bsp 'gas through power' is probably the most common and there's a myriad of adaptors to connect them to different machines where necessary. There's more variation with the plugs for the switch but as said only two contacts are used so it's not rocket science. If your local (or a random) supplier can't sort you a switch plug Newarc would be the obvious choice

More important than all of that is the powersource you have... is it one of the compatible options listed in the manual i posted a link to last night? Do you have the 'umbilical' that lets it 'talk' to the powersource?


* various different sizes with different amperage limitations... 200A DCEN is about the max for aircooled, say, wp26 size but they're (relatively speaking) huge clunky things to be using for delicate work. A wp9 size is much nicer for thin stuff but is only rated at 125A. More info on torches here... http://www.weldcraft.com/products/wp-series/wphand-held-air-cooled/, pretty much all manufacturers including generic cheapnese use the same numbering system for sizes- the prefix letters may differ from wp but ignore that
