Basically a second torch on the backside but with no arc just purging argon.
The seam welder is an automation machine suited for long seams in 1 continuous pass. Can be done Gmaw, gtaw and even plasma welding. The backing bar is part of the jig water cooled. It's a production tool and like most automation processes it produces flawless repeatable results.

If you can shield the arc from both sides while welding on one you can eliminate the back-gouging part of the operation, this reduces the HAZ and speeds up production giving big savings.

Exactly! Every process there produces a new more extended HAZ and with back gouging you produce 3 with back grinding 2 but if you can get all the way through it and protect the root from coking you produce 1 and as said above ruling out 2 more processes saves a ton of man hours which is usually the biggest expense.
