Could I have developed near instant symptoms from cutting stainless with a grinder yesterday?

No mask on (just a Bionic face shield), I used a 1mm slitting disc to cut a rectangle of I think stainless from an old microwave case. Then dressed the edges with an 80 grit flap disc.

I had earache soon after which extended into my throat which felt funny and hurt to swallow. Not sore per se.

Took two paracetamol, a big handful of vitamins pills and an early night. This morning I feel a bit better but still some residual pain.

The noise, fumes from cutting???

A bit later on I dry jigsawed a shape out of some 3mm ali then dressed the edges and buffed the faces with a strip discs getting covered in ali dust so I don't think it was that...

No, you can't get Cr6 from plain stainless steel.
It takes specialized circumstances for Cr6 to form itself, other than being present in some chemicals (all of which are controlled access IIRC)

I can't comment on chrome 6 but thousands of minute needles and other sharp particles of metal can do that to your sinus/respitory system, we can become sensitive to things that didn't previously affect us so being previously unaffected doesn't mean you have been exposed to something new. I used to get mild flu like symptoms from grinding or using degreasers like jizer, I improved my PPE, no issues since.

No, but it highlights an important and often overlooked danger from working in a dusty environment. It's not just breathing in dust that causes health problems.

If the dust gets into your ears which are linked to your throat it can cause irritation and infection, and depending on the type of dust can be carcinogenic. Ear plugs/defenders don't just protect your hearing.

You never watched Erin Brockovich? Chromium 3 you can basically sprinkle it on your chips, Chromium 6 makes your internal organs fall off

I was using scotchbrite bobbins on copper the other day and my nose is still irritated from it, shortly afterwards I developed what could best be described as hayfever symptoms though I don't suffer from hayfever.

Back in the day when i was a smoker, If i was working on a wooden boat often i would have to remove copper rivets.
The tool of choice was a black & decker powerfile with coarse belt, touch it on top of the rove & sand it off then punch it out.
The roves & nails were always covered in verdigris under the paint or varnish & this made roll ups taste absolutely disgusting, a sickly sweet metallic taste that you couldnt get rid of. I used to wear a decent respirator a lot & still do.

Have you been near any human beings? Filthy creatures, especially the little ones, they are walking bio hazards.
Stay in your shed on your own, you can inhale all the lethal cocktails you can create and it will still be a far healthier environment than being near them infernal people's.
