here we go again ! sorry but another newbie to tig

hope this is in the right place mods , i am about to try and learn to tig weld ,i have just bought a regulator and flow meter ,the argon is a side valve and the regulator is bottom connection ,can i switch the inlet to the regulator to the spare (plugged) side on the regulator or am i best just having the gauge flat and the flow meter vertical ,just trying to keep things neat and tucked out of harms way

It will work all right like that My TIG Argon bottle is the same. You can buy an elbow joint but those are the price of a regulator.

Glyn, under no circumstances start messing about with the regulator, some of the blanked off outlets are high pressure so you would end up getting full cylinder pressure coming out. Use the same set up as in the photo above and you won't have a problem, best of luck with the TIG welding

gone the "gudg" way, i couldnt wait for a play i think ive a way to go , didnt do the tungsten on the 3rd run "beginners luck",i guessed at the required cleanliness ,flow rate and the amps IM HOOKED i really do want to master this ,tried the run before walking bit , 4th attempt had a go putting filler in .
tomorrow i will clean some bits up properly and get comfortable sitting at a bench and have a proper go

You can use it like shown above or a simple adaptor can neaten the whole job up so it sits vertical as shown below. .
Put some pics up of your progress it's much easier to advise on
Read the tutorial guides too. They are there to help you out.

cheers richard appreciate your input today's was literally a quick and dirty try just to see , ive never touched a tig torch before ,im just trying to sort the pics now(bit of a technophobe lol) i tried some 2mm at 60a and i tried some 3mm at 70a "dont ask why "then looking at the guides it should have been around 90a got the gas flow about right i think "set at 6l with torch open" ,to fast, to slow and to dirty i think (pics shortly ) i just blasted some bits in the cabinet with some ally oxide but probably would have been better ground ,i couldnt help myself had to try putting some filler in

Always use filler.
There is very few instances where you won't be using it and on mild steel the results are usually porous from the lack of deoxidising agents that the filler adds to the pool.
It's best to practice it with filler from the word go because Tig is primarily a 2 handed process with a few exceptions on different material.

on 2mm steel 1.6 red tungsten and 1.6 filler all at 60a except no4 i tried 65amp no7 cup and does the tungsten look about right extension ?

last 4 runs i tried to get the torch closer to vertical ,i had a couple of tries on thicker material but im waiting on some 2.4 tungtstens, how do you finish the run with a lift tig ?(parweld 162) without getting a worm cast or does that come with the territory ,thanks for any comments

That's good progress.
The orange spot around that blob is almost certainly a long arc length problem where the oxides have been allowed to get in and interrupt your argon shield.
Your tungsten extension looks ok to me. 3-5mm I usually go for for open runs.
Contact ignition tig devotes that bit more skill for initiation and termination.
Where ever possible I like to put the filler in contact with the job and flick the tungsten off the filler low down to the joint. Terminating is another sharp flick. Do not extend your arc length out to break the arc. Tilt the torch to a side in a fast motion to snap out and immediately bring it back to post gas. This should take a split second and with practice gets easier.

thanks richard am i understanding right "you drag the filler slowly in front of the arc in a controlled melt ,controlling the pool by flicking the tungsten back towards your hand ?
thats what i was doing to end the run extending the arc !!!!!.

No. watch the videos on the tig tutorial. It's easier than me trying to explain. You dab the filler in the leading edge of the pool while the torch is pushing the pool. You don't drag anything.

thats what i was trying to do ,watching vids again i can see i was removing the filler between dabs so ending up with blobs on the end of the filler (probably because i was holding the filler to high )so need to work/practice that i think as well to keep the oxidization down "steep learning curve lol"
