I dont know what its called and have searched all that I can.
a while back I found a website that had a machine that was similar to a mig welder as it fed wire but instead of welding it actually "shot" the wire to form new metal in panel replacement it actually would build up its own panel.
has anyone else heard of this?

Hi Boom, would it have been 'thermal spray'? Not sure about 'mig welder' style ones but the only ones I've heard of use oxy/acetylene. I'm also not sure about building replacement panels with one either, I thought they were for building up wear surfaces etc.
Someone like TechnicAl or Matt1978 would probably know more.

It seems a bit too good to be true.

They say it is applied at "40,000 lbs PSI ...... Surely that would cut a hole through the panel especially rusty stuff. It also seems to give the impression you can rebuild the panel from fresh air ?

Or am i getting a bit confused with it all

"How it works" except that it doesn't tell us how it works.

It it was really that clever you could get any rust old shell, give it a sqirt and hey presto a new car.

The before and after photos look impressive.

If it also "galvanises an area" chances are it's a hot zinc spray. The rolls of zinc wire supplied would seem to support this. As such it would be unlikely to be up to much structurally - probably the properties are more like a metal body filler like lead (which can be applied without expensive tools).

The website seems to be orientated around finding people with $20,000 to burn who want to become local agents for the wonder product.

Metal spraying for building up bearings would presumably involve steel and be carried out at a higher temperature.

I assume this is a type of metal spraying, similar to that used to build up the pitting on hydraulic cylinders etc. I have had it done on a pair of motorcycle fork legs. Aluminium spraying is also used to coat steel items to prevent corrosion, and is commonly used on eutectic tubes in the refrigeration industry.
I would have thought it was much too aggressive for use on thin sheet steel, particularly rusty sheet!

Sounds like a std yank Franchise setup,.....

Does seem to be a bit too good to be true. I mean, in one photo there's a gaping rust hole in a car with nothing behind it. In the next it's all beautifully smoothed over. So what, did they just fill the hole with this stuff?

metallizeing is the old school method i know which involves a compressed air rig and O/A, or O/P to spray fine particles of molten metal onto the surface of a damaged part, they use to feed a solid wire or powder int the gun then spray across the surface......

Presumably they coat it with zinc. It is probably a more effective treatment over a shotblasted surface than lead or plastic body filler. Seems fair play for non-structural parts.

Though for structural parts I'd be inclined to weld in new steel, and I rarely see single skin metal with perforations (probably that's a USA thing). My cars tend to fail at the seams so a lot of metal needs to be removed before the repair and there's not much left to spray new metal onto.

Seems like a good idea, but expensive and one that would have a limited application for me.

With powder spray welding (messy stuf) you can use a removable former, Ive used copper coated with something, graphite ? (it was 100s of yrs ago) to spray hard steel, but top surface was crap & had to be ground, but the job worked ok.

Saw that being done on 'campervan crisis' yesterday, guy was aluminising an exhaust silencer using a hand-held gun.

It was really hit and miss and relied heavily on the parent being clean enough, It was one of them things that was supposed to be the "new way" of building material on things like worn machine parts, but the new material wasn't only soft but also porous, hence the fact its now really in the history books.....
