Help!!!

Hi there, this looks like the right site to get some info.
I own a 93 range rover classic and the old girl requires some welding done to her ie. sills and rear crossmember. Rather than pay astronomical garage prices I thought what the heck ill give it a go myself. The question being what would be the best welder for doing the job?? Gas/Gasless?? What max and min amps etc.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The gas option is certainly better for thin sheet such as bodywork. Gas-less is fine on thicker materials but does produce a lot more fumes & spatter & can blow holes in very thin sheet, as it burns fiercer. You can get dual purpose machines which give you the best of both worlds, so that might be a consideration.
Price all depends on budget really. Bear in mind that gas is the main running cost with a MIG & if you have a lot of work to do it can work out very expensive on the small, disposable gas canisters. You can convert all the machines that run on disposables up to larger, refillable cylinders but if you have a lot of work to do I would go straight onto a machine thats ready set up to run on the refillables.

For Min Max - I'm guessing the Range Rover chassis is 3mm? That'll be at least a 130 amp welder. Buying guide has a few more details. For Min there won't be much below 1mm so the standard 30 amp minimum would be fine.

Gas is a small part of he cost, and you can save on anual rental by returning the bottle when you've finished the job. Though if you were to do that than get a welder that works with and without gas as the gas only ones are less useful when you've returned the bottle. Clarke 135EN could be a good choice.
