Help with this Machine/Tool?

Morning Gents. Could anyone tell me what this machine is?

I use this machine quite a lot at a local engineering firm. Its like a conveyor belt with a sanding belt

I use it to remove the top mill scale on head flanges, but it also gives a very nice looking uniform brush effect which i really like.

As much as its nice to have use of this machine, its not always convenient for them as they hardly use it (See it being used as a coffee table) and it also requires air, to which there is no direct feed for it (Usually forklift a compressor round for me)

I'm looking to see if a smaller one is out there for my small shop. not needed any wider than 8" as i only use it to face/ brush head and turbo flanges.

any help would be great.

I think it's a wide belt sander. Whether or not you'll find a hobbyist sized one or not, I couldn't say.

I've always known 'em as linishers, might be worth a look on EvilBay, there are a few on there (one not too far from you, Thetford?) but a lot are 3-phase as they're not typical home workshop tools - can you feed it the required volts, or stick a VFD on it?

i have a flat linisher, pretty powerful one, by trying to hold it on the belt to give it a nice finish has claimed my fingers a few times already,

these sander thickneser's are used a lot in the USA, mainly fancy wood workers.......
it's a starting point to look at......240volt should be no prob.....also look at Canada, they use the same elec as us where the States is often 110v on small tools but this should be 220-240v.....as they class that as industrial........hahaha.....

Normally found in woodworking shops to sand work tops, doors etc.

would a floor belt sander mounted upside down work?

they come in 8" and 10" width, and belts are available.

I don't think it's a thickness sander - they have a drum/belt mounted above the workpiece, which is fed through on a conveyor.

the op describes it as a conveyor belt with a sanding belt? so *under* the workpiece? (which ties in with the intended use)

there's a 6" one on eBay - 3ph 5kw motor!

they're pretty easy to make, however - plenty of tutorials/designs on youboob.
not generally 8" wide though!

Look in the guitar making forums, they use them for thicknessing sound board etc and there are a few diy builds about.

The good ones (like the one in your shop) will have a vacuum pump to hold the work piece to the bed as it passes through the sander
Great bit of kit if you have the room

i had found Drum Sanders, but the one i use in that shop has a sanding belt.

The conveyor belt is on the horizontal and the belt is on the vertical.

We had a brand new one installed at a company I worked for, the machine installer had awful problems getting it set up, the belt tracking was done by pneumatic rams and limit switches, every time we sent a door though the belt would fail to track and end up tearing, I think he got through the best part of 20 belts at about £20* a belt before he sussed it. I thought it was brilliant, I ended up with tons of decent quality sand paper!!!

*This was about 25 years ago.

Mainly used for graining stainless plates. A sanding belt runs round a pair (or three depending on model) of rollers and the conveyor runs at an adjustable speed so the plates pass under the sanding belts at a constant rate of feed. A bit brutal to just call it a 'linisher' but effectively what it is.

Looked at buying one a few years ago when polishing costs began to stack up. They are expensive.

For metalwork, not a woodworking tool. If they are selling and it is in decent nick i am possibly interested.

still not difficult to make:
look at "drum thicknesses" but use a driven drum and an idler drum linked by a belt?
