Help with information on a Vosper V8 Marine Gear Box

Hi all, I am hoping someone will be able to help me with some information. I have recently bought this old International Winch Truck, so I have it going now. It has a Vosper V8 marine gear box to wind in and out this huge Garwood Winch. (I think it is 44,000lb) but my trouble is it winds in but it won't wind out.
So would anybody have some information on this Vosper Gear box , like how to adjust it and the oil type and quantity. I can't find anything on the internet.
This gearbox is powered from this trucks PTO on the transfer case.

I am not an authority on this equipment but have you considered that maybe it does not wind out, and has to be pulled out? I notice there appears to be a brake on the winch drum, so if the winch did wind out under power, why would it have this?

There is a dog clutch on the brake end of this Winch which I was not planning on using but this Vosper marine gear box is a foward and reversing unit and this truck in its previous life was for some sort of ground drilling and it would have wound out and in under power.

Probably a fairly simple unit with a forward and reverse cutch pack that lock hydraulically.
if working in one direction it sort of rules out a pump or fluid issue. Unless a valve is stuck and not letting fluid flow to the clutch pack .
my first thought would be to check the oil for any signs of contamination/ debris / or burnt smell.
if any of those symptoms are present then it’s time for a rebuild.
as per oil spec most will work with a straight sae30 oil.

If it’s the same as the one I have it detaches drive to the axle and uses the gearbox for varying pto speeds, reverse on the gearbox with the axle drive disengaged would reverse the winch.

Would a power out winch, however it was used, not be at risk of simply creating a big birds nest of extremely tangled cable?

Thank you for your reply. I took this picture today and I agree it does look simple and I think it does not have any hydraulics, I think it is totally mechanical. I think it is probably from the 1940's vintage.
From the picture on the left hand side is a castlelated nut that looks like an adjustment for the band and it's final tension is decided by the position of the sliding cam profile which looks like it is adjustable to the clevis with a lock nut.
Might you have some advise on adjustments. Alternatively might you know somewhere that may be able to advise me.
And do you still think straight sae30 grade oil for this gearbox is suitable.

Hi Bob,
The truck is a 4 wheel drive with Hi/Lo transfer case with a rear PTO on the back of the transfer case, I know that if I put the main gear box into reverse it will reverse the direction of the winch but my problem is I require the Aux marine gearbox to work in both directions.

looks to be the same set up as the old Parsons box ,,,, a clutch pack and a brake band running an epicyclic gear set ,, is there a big adjuster bolt and lock nut right on the bottom of the box ...
ill get a better look at the pics later , hard to tell on my phone.

Think I’d put EP90 in it, just be careful if there’s any yellow metal in there as some ep90 eats it

I certainly wouldnt put ep90 in it ,,, not till I was sure what its meant to run on then use what its meant to be run on , Old parsons boxes run on engine oil in the main box , but not the ones with friction modifiers in , if you put gear oil in them they would be toast in ten mins. and very few can repour and then scrape the main white metal bearing in the case ... I had to but another two boxes while getting the bearings sorted out.

If its got wet plates/bands inside UTO would be a safe bet. Universal tractor oil is ok with wet brakes/clutches.
