Help with correct steel usage please

Evening all , I havent been around for a while as life sort of took over , anyway a chum and I are contemplating building a sort of dune buggy , the sort thing like a Chenowth ,and whilst we have the contemmentis to do it , we were in talk about the best type of tube to use , it will likely be 40mm tube or there abouts , but the real question is what grade / type as it will no doubt be under stress / stress's .

Admittedly we are in planning phase but it would be good to start off on the right tangent .

when you say tube, i assume you are going to be making the chassis/cage for the dune buggy with it?

i would use whatever grade of steel is used in roll cages, they stand up to huge abuse when things go wrong

im sure i read somewhere about a race buggy being made from 4140 ChroMoly

You need to speak to UK racer and a few others that do stock cars and other types like grass racing or Oval.

You can get the specs I thing for these on line and see what types of tube they use.

I know that on my Kit car I have used square ERW, if done with big enough size tube it would still be strong enough.

CFS3NBK, chrome molley requires more skilled welding! I would suggest that at 40 mm od, 12 or 14 gauge would suffice. If your building the frame to a plan , i suggest itll be american and quote dom tubeing with a size and wall thickness.

The more the chasis is triangulated, the lighter it can be.

I might be thinking steam pipe but it's not really my thing just thimking engine and suspension mounts you want a bit of wall in it right
That's what we used on old comp safari stuff in the 80s but scuntineering etc changes
