Help! welder needed for bespoke project..

At gun point I agreed with my wife that we 'need' a new bathroom.

On taking down a partition wall to expose the header and hot water tank and all the pipes,
I discovered that the 40 year old galvanised header tank was leaking from a worn out joint.

We need to replace the tank before we can do anything else,and quite soon! but none of the mass-market plastic tanks will fit in the space.

Can anyone on this forum fab me up a galvanised tank with the following dimensions:

12 inches wide, 30 inches long and 36 inches high, which in my school maths equates to about 50 gallons.

It will need a pipe outlet in the bottom, and on one end at the top an inlet pipe with ballcock valve and an overflow pipe.

If anyone can make me such a beast please can you email me with an estimated cost - and if you could deliver to South London - well that would indeed be icing on the cake!

Couldn't you connect two central heating header tanks in tandem?

Hunt round some plumbing supplies(plumb center/ Plumbing Trade Supplies/ Plumbase). Will be cheaper than trying to get a tank made then galvanized. Link two tanks together will do( 2 22mm pipes at bottom of tank). Fill in one tank and out let in the other.

If you're going to the trouble of having a new bathroom and your header tank's 40 years old then the hot water cylinder is probably also suspect. Check out an unvented hot water cylinder which doeas away with the header tank and provides mains pressure hot water - see:

You need a qualified plumber though to install it.

They do plastic tanks that big. I have a couple of old ones lying around I use as backup for my drive cleaner.
You have to fit them onto a 3/4 plywood base though

you would have to pay for the bit around the weld to be re galved, However i am not aware of anywhere that with try and galv just those bits, so its a total re galv for the entire tank. Probably uneconomical i am sure they must make plastic ones these days. I think we even have an old one in our garden.

Since my initial panic I've found someone who will make me a fibreglass tank - but i will check out all your links... I also found a place that do water tanks for boats, with one at just the right dimensions.

What concerns me is that i have found out far more information in 24 hours on the subject than the 'qualified' plumber who came round seemed to know!

Other good news is that the insurance comany have said they will pay for the damage caused by the link - which includes rebuilding the wall that i would have had to build anyway. Chuffed.
