Help needed with my GYS smartmig 162

Ive just set my new GYS mig up and as im a newbee I would like a bit of help/advice on the machine if posdible .Firstly im using 0.8 wire so what tension do I wind the knob down to on the feed area .it had increments ?
Secondly I thought the smart panel on the control face would or should light up and allow you to select the correct options of is it merely a table showing info ? Any help from someone who has the same machine would be much appreciated

Not sure on front panel, looks to me as just a graphic showing info. it will only be a rough guide and you should fine tune from there

As per tension, on the reel of wire it only needs enough tension to stop it rotating still after you release the trigger, wire tension you should pinch wire at the tip with finger and thumb, a light grip, then slowly adjust tension untill wire can still start to feed with a light grip

The panel does not light up on that model, its a guide to get you in the ball park, so you look at metal thickness, wire diameter, and whether its gas or fluxcore, then clik the rocker switches to the suggested positons, turn the wire speed knob into the suggested colour band, do a test, and tweak if required.
Check that the tension on the spool is at it minimum to stop it birds nesting.
On the wire feed, turn your gas bottle off, stick the earth clamp out of the way wind the tension knob out.Squeeze the trigger, and pinch the wire when it come out of the torch, if the wire feed ok but the rollers skid when the wire is stopped, thats about right.Read off the increments if you want, and note them for the wire size you are using. Fluxcore rollers are serrated so bear that in mind.
It sounds long winded and complicated, but its how most blokes set their MIGs up.Wire tension on the spools of wire could vary, doing the above keeps tension to the minimum and less stress on the wire feed kit.
If you end up with a long length of wire sticking out after setting up, don't cut it off, lower the tension arm, lift the top roller and wind the wire in by turning the spool.
When you have finished work, turn gas bottle off, lower tension arm, lift top roller, squeeze trigger to purge gas, leave top roller up, put tension arm back vertical and close cover and the spring tension will be eased until you start work again.
You made a good choice, my 162 has been going great guns, doing shop and site work, cracking bit of kit.

Sorry, missed a bit coz its friday night and real ale, and wed rine night. When you put the wire spool on leave the wire fixed to the spool as it came out of the package, spin it by hand and check the tension, I have mine turning quite freely but it should stop dead, do this set up before you feed the wire into the torch, I find this give me minimum tension on the system.Gys use a meatier motor than most in that price range, but why make its life any harder than necessary? it should outlast the other brands even longer in theory (my guess-dunno for sure).
And you soon get the hang of the wire feed settings, mine is normally about 9o clock for most stuff, 11o clock for meatier stuff (say 3mm), 7oclock for skinny stuff.

If that was a push button light up selective panel it would probably be inverter based and at least twice the price. It's a small transformer based step control mig with a guidance chart which they for some reason call a "smart panel" I've used one only a short while ago and it was great, nothing fancy.
