help measuring wood screws

say the above examples...are they measured accross the external part of the thread or what ?

It's the shank between the head and the thread.

im on about say where it says no6 /3.5mm is the 3.5mm the outer measurment on the threads

mine here measure 3.5 outermost thread x25mm
