Help me ordering some metal/steel?

I have finally got a welder and I have been practising on some scrap metal I had around. But I now need to order some metal to work on my Beetle.

I don't need much just a couple of lengths or box section and angle iron. I also only need a sheet of 1mm mild steel 1000mm squared would probably be enough to get me going. I have not found anywhere locally who sells in small batches (I live in South East London - North Croydon) Plus I am bit shy about phoning and asking.

I have had a look on ebay and there are a few suppliers but they seem very expensive for the small bits they supply. This one for example just seems a lot of money for a bit of metal.

I have had a look on parkers but I can't work out how to order.

If you buy small pieces you WILL pay for it, but if you're not able to collect yourself then delivery costs on a full sheet may negate the savings

IS & G in Beckenham is probably your best bet. They'll cut a sheet up for easier transport. Not got contact details to hand but yell.com will get you there No

Stockists are used to dealing with random phone calls, don't feel bad about calling just do it

Just pop along to your local car parts shop (the "trade" type) they sell body panels & sheets steel for fixing cars with.

Metal Supermarket http://www.metalsupermarkets.com/MSC-storefinder.aspx?Region=UK&Map=UK branches are probably the best place to buy small bits of steel. My local will buy a length of whatever you want and cut a bit off for you if they don't have what you want in stock.

Hi there,

Try your local B & Q. They sell small sheets of 1mm Mild Steel. Look in the hardware section - where they keep sheets of pre-punched MDF, etc.

Not too expensive either.

Hi funstuie

How about trying GSF(germanswedishfrench)
I'm half way through a beetle resto at the moment ie floor pans and heater channels on both sides plus front wheel well and all the other fiddly bits but the GSF panels are cheap and a pretty good fit and there are branches all over the country.
It saves knocking up panels from sheet but they're only treated in rubbish primer so need painting as soon as.

I'm not too far away from you and have run into the same problem, there's no real steel stockholders in this neck of the woods.

I did get some sheet from 4 Square Metal - they're on the Garth Road trading estate just outside Morden. They are a fabrication business so don't have much in the way of angle etc but may be able to help. (Think I paid £25 for a 8'x44 sheet including cutting)

I did a beetle resto a while back (look at the pictures in my album , under my profile), all the body parts came from Big Boys Toys (who at the time were in Thurrock, and I was in Croydon). They supply all the body parts you can think of mail order.
