I don't think putting a run on a piece of steel that big is going to give him zinc flu, even if it isn't cleaned off it will burn through quite easily with the heat from the arc. I do agree that it is operator related not the machine though. It looks like it's been squirted on from a distance with not enough power. Try holding the gun with two hands to steady it and just make a puddle to start with instead of trying to lay a run down. Turn it up to full power and wire speed as high as it goes then hold it about 10mm from the plate and pull the trigger. If it pushes back at you and stutters turn the feed speed down and repeat till it fizzes then experiment with the power knob.

Judging by looking through the holes in the plate its way too thick for .6mm wire.

what i was told when i first learned to weld.

"1/ get some thick clean steel

2/power to max

3/ wire speed low.

go weld. wire will most likely burn back to tip. get in closer.

it will still burn back. slowly increase wire speed until it stops burning back.

now it will burn through! Experiment with your speed until you can almost cut a line.

now start turning your power down. but watch your wire speed as power is often linked to speed on cheep machines. turn your power down and your speed drops. when you stop burning through you might if your lucky be welding."

I tried it and ended up buying a book on welding lol. perhaps it will work for you. I've been welding for ever. one day I might get it right!

those cheep valves for the disposable bottles are crap. on some if you screw them right up they block gas flow. so you have to back them off a turn. too far and you lose all you gas and your bottle ices up. screw the bottle up tight and open the valve wide. stick the torch near your ear(power OFF)pull your trigger. if you don't get a gasp of gas your either too tight(the valve i mean lol) or out of gas.

try slackening the bottle slightly with the trigger pressed until you hear the gas. at that point turn your valve off. check the bottle isn't leaking at the tread then open the valve slowly with trigger pressed until you just get gas. your set to go. but chances are your bottle will be lose on the valve and spin tighter or slacker at will. make sure it cant move. At disposable bottle wont normally ice over unless your right on the edge of your duty cycle or the valve thread isn't sealed, e.g. too slack. or there is a serious leak inside the machine. Its one pipe from bottle to trigger valve in the torch. check the fitting/nut that holds the wire on the trigger valve is tight. This nut is usually also the gas connection to the valve.

they can be a swine to nip tight while lining everything up to fit back into the torch handle.

you got it bang on i tried today with a bit of 0.5mm steel and I laid a good weld about 4" long no holes not much spatter nice sound I think the last bit was just to thick and when I turned it up full (185amp) it just melted the wire all the way up to the tip thanks for all your help guys and gals
