Right i dont know how this is going to go without pictures but here goes

the missus has bought a horse box that needs some work ,now i have taken the floor out because it was rotten but also to check the chassis and this is where i would like some help and suggestions the middle parts of the chassis are ok but all along the outer edge is 60mm angle facing up which the bottom supports the floor and the upright has all of the horsebox welded to it now this is all very rusty and ideally i would replace it but this is not an option as it would mean basically rebuilding the whole thing
so i was wondering what the best way to go about it was ,i thought about maybe getting some new angle and placing it on top welding it to the crossmembers and maybe drilling loads of holes to enable it to be spot welded to whats existing
how does this sound ? or is there another way ?
your help is much appreciated

what about bolting it instead of the spot welds. you need to try and design it so it wont rust again or at least slow it down. is it just the muck etc thats rotten the steel away or is it the spray off the wheels etc. either way try to stop it. try to get pictures mate as they will help on deciding which path to take with the angle

Thanks for a quick reply ,it is the moisture from inside the box that has caused it to rot ,i will try and get some pictures tomorrow

Yeah and producing 'moisture' is about all they're good for!

It would depend on how long you want to keep the 'box for?

If it's for a long time then I would look at cutting all the rotten metal out and replacing it with new, painting it and then waxoyling it. That should stop the rust 'n' rot.

Even though it seems like a nightmare i would chop all the angle out and renew it. In the long run it could even take less time than trying to stick and join something on top.

Overlaying angle and bolting it to the old will leave more moisture traps and you might have to redo it in a year or two.

If you have something suitable you could support the body of the box chop the upright bits and wheel the chassis out for repair.

It doesn't look like it will take long for the steel roofing sheets used for the sides to rot away above the angle.

the bad news is there is only one way cut it out and replaced it the good news is your wife will be eternally grateful cut all the uprights and the lift of the top try and do one side at the time used as tin a cutting disk as you can get this will keep you from losing with when cutting off the cross members the trailer is only as strong as the chassis as everything is welded to it

From what I can see the upstand of the angle looks ok, as the horsey pee didn't run up hill.

What about stripping/cutting the flat part of the angle out and replacing it with bar, welded along the cut and onto the cross members?
That'd save messing with the rest of the fixings.

Sorry im not quite with you on that one
the floor has to sit on whatever i do so really it has to be something flat

I would be inclined to cut the lot off and start from scratch.
New angle around the sides, perhaps get it folded, so it ends up a bit higher than the original, then you can cut off the rubbish at the bottom of the sides, without loosing any height.

My missus would't dare buy something like that

yes i think it looking like i am going to chop it all out and put in new ,i think as long as i take my time i should be alright doing it a piece at a time
as for the side im not too worried as there is usually ply half way up but obviously i had to take it out to get the floor out

Ahh i see what you mean now ,when you said bar i thought you meant round bar
i think i will replace the whole lot as the other ways seem either more work or they wont last long and i dont want to be doing it ever again

Hitch can you recommend anywhere to get the metal ? it seems to be 60mm angle about 5mm thick
