I seem to remember seeing something similar in a "Fireball tools" youtube video. I'll se if I can find it.
This isn't the one I remember but it explains the basic idea.
Oh, and the "trick" is that the join is resting on three points. Three points will always describe a perfect plane no matter how crooked your floor is.
