Hi everyone. After months of lurking I have finally given in and joined.
A little about myself. My name is Paul and I live on the outskirts of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.
I became interested in welding at the age of 16 (I'm 44 now
). I learnt arc welding on a YTS scheme ( remember those?! ) at Ashington Colliery, Northumberland. The scheme was as a blacksmith welder which unfortunately only lasted a year. After this scheme ended I was unable to take that line of work any further ( cheers Mrs T ) and had to take employment elsewhere in other industries.
Anyway, the welding / heating / shaping bug never left me. Bit by bit I have managed to acquire the tools needed to pursue metalworking as a hobby.
During spells of unemployment I helped pay my way by making trailers out of whatever I could get my hands on and sell them. I also made gas bottle stoves for profit too. Unfortunately I have no photos of these.
Those early projects were done using an ancient Cebora Dallas 90. I still have that machine and it has worked faultlessly.
I also own a SIP? Weldmate arc machine though this has never been needed.
Last year I bought a Power Craft ( ALDI ) mig welder. I found this forum whilst researching MIG techniques. The MIG, in my eyes, has never let me down. It was a bu**er to set up but once done it is great.
At the moment I am using gasless wire but only because it was bought with the welder. Although I can tollerate the mess and heat that comes with gasless, I will soon move over to CO2 and "normal" wire.
Recent projects include a carrier rack for my Puch Maxi ( I know! ) and if I get time I will post some pics of the work so far.
I also enjoy making sculptures. Little by little they have become more and more complicated - the work in progress at the mo is for " wor lass " and I will post some pics once her birthday passes ( 8 weeks time or so ).
Anyway, I could rattle on for hours typing here so I'll end it now!
Excellent, informative and friendly forum you have here. Thank you for having me.
