Found the forum by chance, while trying to decide which welder to buy.
I did a touch of welding during my apprenticeship some 30+ years ago, but that was all oxy acetylene and brazing, using the same kit. I thought I had an idea of which welder I would like to buy, but reading some of the comments posted by various members, I'm going back to the drawing board to see what hints and tips I can pickup from the forum. I will appologise now for all the stupid questions I am likely to post, but would be grateful if some of you would be kind enough to keep me on the right road.

This really is the place to find the answers you will need.
I have been lurking in the back-ground for a while now, and can honestly say I have learnt more in the short time in the shadows than I have ever done during all the years that I thought I could weld

Had a chat with my uncle last weekend. He's always used gas welding but had heard that MIG might reduce panel distortion (he's right). I mentioned I'd tried gas but hadn't given it more than an afternoon of effort and it had turned out crap, and that was his experience of MIG.

Depends on what you are welding ultimately - if you need some advise on which welder for what you want to do then feel free to ask - someone will know.

Thanks to all who replied. Glad to be here. Will probally sit on the sidelines, as much of what you guys talk about goes straight over my head!!
