Hi all. James from Wakefield. Been welding since I was 15 when I went to Sheffield to buy a SIP Topweld 140 with my brother in my grandfathers Reliant. Prior to that I bought a weird 'SolidOx' gas welder out of Exchange and Mart. Remember those? You used to set fire to a peroxide(?) tablet that burned in a closed tube and expelled excess oxygen. Anyhow, I've been running a BOC ADR300 and a Butters NBC500 MIG set for the last 25 years. I've finally gone modern as I'm downsizing and losing my 3ph supply. I've switched over to some RTech gear to keep me going. I was going to sell the big old sets but last week when I was setting them up for demonstration, the BOC went 'pop'! I'd been welding some aluminium when I noticed the arc wondering and a relay start chattering in the set, then something blew. Turns out it was a small selenium rectifier in the control circuitry that's blown. My plan is to replace it with a modern silicon rectifier when I've traced the circuitry.
