Hello. I need your help.

Hi, I'm Don from Halesowen near Birmingham.

I have a history of general ham-fistedness and really don't think it's advisable for me to try to learn how to weld, so I'm on the lookout for a reliable person to do some welding on my old Mark 2 VW Golf.

I need someone who will be sympathetic to the fact that I treasure this old car and will also be mindful of the fact that it has been treated to gallons of Waxoyl over the years so is probably highly inflammable !

The work required is largely cosmetic in the sill area and at the bottom of one rear wheelarch with two holes approx 1 cm square needing to be welded, nothing structural as far as I can see.

I am willing to travel up to about 25 mls radius of Birmingham to someone who will do a good job on my car for a reasonable price, preferably someone who is into older cars and is respectful of their needs.

Can anyone please suggest such a person ?

Hiya, from what I know, you have to completley empty the fuel tank and fill it with water to prevent ignition during electric welding, otherwise it would require gas welding.

This may be a problem if you want to drive home after

Errrrm nope!
You've got more chance of buggereing up the engine due to residual water that will stay in the tank after you would empty it and refill with fuel,any welding will be fine unless its right next to the tank or fuel lines when in that case you would remove/protect them accordingly.

How can I put this I think you are mistaken!!
The filling of fuel tanks with water is not necessary when welding cars IMO.However Its what some people recomend if you are attempting to apply heat to a fuel tank while its removed from the car for repair (water expells the petrol fuems)

Apart from the hazzards of other combustable matarials and fuel hoses it is always best to disconnect the battery otherwise with electric welding you can damage your alternater circuits or ECU if you have one!!
Be sure to have the radio/alarm codes.Garages who weld cars have a gadget to clamp on the battery to protect the circuits though

It is better to use soapy water, but only for repairing the tank.

Still not having any luck finding a sypathetic welder near Brum capable of doing a good job without incinerating the whole car.

No, I mean as in someone who will do a good job without causing more damage than they are repairing. I'm quite prepared to pay a good price for a good job well done.

you shouldn't have any problems though, but you could quite easily buy a welder and have a bash yourself for a similar set up fee.
