Hello from Wigan

Hello fellas,Ive just decided at the age of 63 that I would like to learn how to weld and possibly get good enough to do jobs on my car...I realise its not an easy thing to learn but I will keep on going till I get the hang of it...however I have just bought a Mig (no gas) 100amp welder...Ive been told different thing about this type...some good...some bad....I have it now so thats what Im going to learn on...Ive had a little practice and blew some really good holes in the sheet metal....Im on the lowest setting 55 amps and a wire speed of 2....Im going to make a lot of holes in the next week or so...just thought I would introduce myself as I know I shall be asking for lots of advice from you skilled guys..

welcome to the forum steve, a lot of good guys on here with hundreds of years of experience between them ,

never used a no gas set up so cant comment on your plant but keep plodding away and if you get stuck just ask

Thank you Sir,
I used to live up in Fife..Glenrothes...I loved it...beautiful place...spent hours on the Lomond Hills,
I shall keep plodding on...Im waiting on an Auto darkening mask just now...I have a hand held one that I find awkward to use.I will practice on thicker steel for a while and when Im fairly confident I will have another go at the sheet welding and basicaly play around with the welder to find the best settings for myself...Im sure you know what I mean...pity there are only 2 settings...high & low....but I shall master it one day

You're really going to struggle welding car body thickness metal with 55A, you really need to be down to about 30A to make any progress.

Ive gathered that I shall struggle...but seeing as Ive only just bought this welder I will just have to crack on the best I can...I was chatting to a mate last night who is a car body repairer about my welder...and he uses one similar that only has the 2 settings....he tells me that he manages fine with his....he described a method that he uses (went right over my head lol)...he is going to come and set my one up for me with the settings and wire he uses...so with a lot of luck and lots of steel sheets I may just get the hang of it....failing that....another new welder....but not before Ive given it a good go.
