Hello from Inverness

Hi all.

Been welding on/off since I was 14 (now 40), mainly stick. Almost always repair jobs for myself or others.

Trying to ‘crack’ the skill of cast iron repairs, as my other hobby is machine woodworking with old, green, heavy cast machines.

Seem to have become a part-time mechanic, with people bringing me Freelanders, Disco 3/4s, Defenders, also other makes for ‘little jobs’. Last major one was a clutch for a FL TD4. Too often, they hear I have a welder - ‘can you weld my exhaust?’

‘No, I can’t weld rust’.

Kit:
Stealth Digi-Arc 200 LT inverter arc welder.
Oxyprop gas set
Boxford AUD (VSL) - encouraged to buy through watching John Mills (your very own Doubleboost)’s Sunday night night caps back-to-back, which was my ‘apprenticeship’

Usual drill press/grinders etc.

Wadkin RB (1932) surface planer

Wadkin BRA radial arm saw
Multico K mortiser
Cooksley spindle moulder

Startrite TA165 table saw
Jet 22-44 drum sander

Well, if you know of anyone near me who likes looking at 1986 Evinrude 70 VROs, let me know!

Bloody thing won’t idle when in the water, which makes manoeuvring a bit comical.

I’m ok with diesels and EFI petrols, but multi-cyl carbed engines (which might need vacuum balancing and ignition timing) are a new one.

I had a nice CEM 180 when I was younger, but sold it as I wasn’t using it much. Slightly regret that.

I tried a lad’s gasless MIG (cheap one) a few years ago and didn’t like it. I thought I could make better welds with my stick, without paying for the gasless wire.

Last serviced one 20 odd years ago, my sons University dive club had one. Would look at carbs first though could be coils, ht leads or plug related.

That bottom pic is from the ebay listing! Real workshop floor is currently covered in tools and rust from where I’ve been hammering a socket onto another crappy Peugeot locking wheel nut.

Thanks. I’ve sort of become a reluctant expert in Freelander 1 TD4s, and am reasonably good with my Defender TD5 (excellent) and the wife’s Disco 4 (excellent when it works).

I’m half looking for a milling machine, maybe a mini-mill.
