Hello, Can you answer my enquiry? (ESAB)

Hello my name is Daniel and naturally I will start with a question that I hope someone may be able answer.

I am an Electronics Technician and my fathers panel beater friend has a ESAB Smashweld 180 MIG welder. He has taken out the rectifier set for me to repair as he determined the welder was not working and wanted me to have a look at it for him.

I have determined that there are two diodes shorted. The markings on the diodes are E1210 which are Anode stud mounted.

I would like to know what these diodes are or the specifications on these diodes, such as current and reverse voltage so I can source some to replace these faulty ones. I have tried to internet search the markings on the diodes themselves and also the welder but have not been able to find out any information.

Your help would be much appreciated.

I doubt a 180A welder will have 35A diodes.

Would probably be 170A or so, 200V or greater. You would need for fine one with the same stud size.

E1210 could well be a 'house marking", some code used only by ESAB internally. Lots of large companies do this. Sometimes they are similar to codes makers use on products they sell on the open market, which causes confusion.

Far better to get some stud mounting diodes from Farnell etc, easily capable of taking the max current and voltage.

Hi Danlar, The diodes are 150 volts and 35 amps.
I have these diodes in stock ( € 10 each)

Thanks for the feedback on the diodes for the Esab Smashweld 180. I was able to source these diodes and the welder works once again.

There is another problem with this thing now. On Continuous weld mode (|) the motor speed does not work. It just drives the motor with no ability to slow it down. The problem is that there is no base voltage to turn on M14 to slow the motor down. The potentiometer measures and is working fine.

My question is, Do any of you guys happen to have a circuit diagram for the M8 control P.C.B? I have researched the internet, spoken to Esab agents and other welder repairers here in Australia and nobody has one or has the means of getting one. They tell me they just replace the P.C.B's or used to as not many of these welders come in for repair apparently these days.

So if any of you guys have a circuit diagram for the M8 control board or know where I could get one I would be most gratefull. I am not liking the the possibility of having to draw my own.

Any help is much appreciated.

Hi Danlar, check the big transistors. Mostly one of these are short circuit and then the motorspeed is not adjustable. If still the PCB is broken I will repair it for you but I can not help you with a drawing Sorry
