Helicoil & Timesert

ive got some threads to repair in an diesel engine (aluminium) on a whacker plate. Lent it to neighbour come back broken!

They’re M10x1.5 and plenty of meat to put bigger insert in.

Has anyone got any recommendations as to Helicoil Plus vs. Wurth Time-Sert vs. Keensert.

Keensert seem to be the most expensive. £7 an insert! No idea how much the instal kit is.

The helicoil plus kit from Cromwell is £65. Will need a 10.4mm drillbit I think too.

Wurth kit is £115 (via Eshop not off the van)

Looks to be a helicoil distributor down in Basildon too (Abbott Fastners) so may be able to get a decent price on a master thread kit for M10. That way all the bits should stay together and not get lost!

Cheapest option if it’s possible to do so is step up to m14 and drill it out retap.

I ended up buying a cheap ebay special helicoil kit for the 2 I had to do in a motorcycle top yoke.

To me if it's not a safety critical part then I thought it was worth a shot.
£30 or so for m4,5,6,8,10 in a kit with drill bits.

I have used recoil sets at work and are nice but not really any different.

I've found the cheaper ones little softer hence sometimes difficult to knock off the tap after install.

Agree 100% I've used loads of helicoils and for assemblies that don't get stripped often and they are fine. If I needed to do a sparkplug then I'd go for a timesert less chance of the insert unthreading.

Only ever used genuine helicoil, and always got the kit with the drill, tap and insertion tools- like you say, they stay together that way.

I make my own timeserts if there is enough meat.
If it’s taking a stud I make a stepped stud with a bigger thread to go in the damaged part. Used to do that a lot on Mercedes injector studs
