Helicoil Taps

I have a whole bunch of taps labelled as helicoil or helicoil finishing taps, but obviously I don't have the helicoils.

most appear to be Armstrong?

are they worth holding onto or sticking on eBay for someone?

if they are finishing taps is there a 1st I'm missing?

Unless you think you might ever want to helicoil something then you may as well pass them on.
I have never checked but I don't think they confirm to any standard dimensions so they are probably not much use for anything else.

They do not seem to sell very well on ebay. Armstrong are one of the best but there are people selling other brands on ebay for less than a tenner delivered.
Might be better to buy one of the mixed sets of inserts and make up some insertion tools and keep them 'just incase' although if it's not for regular use you would be just as well off buying a cheap set complete with the tools as well.

I can check in the catalogue when I get home but I don't think you are missing any.
I think the standard ones are just roughing and finishing

3/8 bsw used by farriers for studs in aluminium shoes. You might be able to sell some to them although they are mostly lazy buggers and won't just want the taps so you would have to provide the inserts and tool as a kit for them

They do. Generally called STI taps, for Standard Thread Insert.

I ment they don't create a standard size thread (if you wanted to use them as regular workshop taps)
Ie, a tap for a m10bhelicoil can't be used to tap a regular m12 hole.
Or maybe they can. That link you have posted above is the first one I have seen to give actual dimensions.

I your wanting rid could you list the sizes please?
I repair quite a bit of stuff that has BSF/W UNF/C & BA in it.

I'm gonna keep them, never know when they will come in handy, just have to buy the inserts when required.

I've got a mix of BSW, BSF, BA, UNC helicoil raps and a few random inserts. Plus a few instal tools. One Big UNF Tap.

They might be ' wierd sizes' in the real world, but in the world of classic bikes the smaller sizes would be gold dust. The crap alloy in British bikes post war ( melted down Lancasters ) means that threads strip regularly. I'd bang afew of them on ebay , but choose your heading carefully , so they come up on classic bike parts searches...
