Have a 4 mm helicoil kit
Been making mounts for a DRO (I now wish I had used steel)

sorry not got a 4 or anything that small, whats about putting a tapered threaded cone in from the backside, and the bolt will pull it into the countersinked hole.?? or just a shouldered stud thing, easier to make again bring it in from the back.This is a 6mm one--any good??

I've got the M4 x 0.7 inserting tool but no helicoils, I got a bunch of tools as a job lot. I'm probably too far away but if you want to borrow it I can post it too you.

If it's an oversized hole in aulminium, I would fill it using a lumiweld rod then drill and re-tap.
Lumiweld rods melt before aluminium does, using just a blow torch.

I counter bored the back with a 7 mill cutter then pressed a 4 mill nut in place

Ime getting a DRO for my Harrison 11" in a month or so John and this reading has been great..will there be another mention in the next nightcap?...btw thats a great idea for a captive nut

Looking good john, I've been undecided about putting a DRO on my M300 as I can't see a suitable way to fit the scale to the cross slide without disabling the dovetail used to mount the rear tool post.
