height of stupity?

mate rang yesterday asking to borrow arc welder to do his vitara chassiss.
got phone call this morning to say no power lead on welder, most of my gear as the power leads for comps on them to cut down amount of cables running rd.
also find less stuff goes missing.
dropped in on way from taking boy to school, he was going to weld plate on about 3" from nearly full petrol tank .
put welder in back of landy and told him to call me when he as removed tank.

if you cant remove the fuel tank,then its best to have it full up instead of being empty&full of vapours!

In the motor trade years ago, I've welded inches away from petrol tanks a number of times. We used to put a sheet of ply in between the job and the tank, to ensure no accidents. Still hair-raising though, you sweat like a pig and felt thankful when you'd got it finished.

Wouldn't do it today, but it was standard practice then.

I recently turned round after doing some spraying to watch a mate set fire to his customers car as he didnt put any wet towels inside the car and the floor carpet, rear seat and headling went up! a few hours later and a few quid lighter after repairing it the woman didnt notice anything, was very funny but stupidly obvious mistake for a guy thats been welding cars for 30 odd years lol

my dad was half romany gyspy which is my first language and he was working in germany till i was 7 which is my second language.
i didnt actually attend proper school till i was 10 and we came back here to live.

Harsh!

Had the lid off the garage bin one day, but it was a good way behind me like 8 feet or so. Mask down, welding, a hot rock must've flown, and ignited a rag from the day before that'd had thinners on. The bin being behind and mask down, the flames were going quite well by the time I got the niff of smoke and flipped up the visor...
Bin lid kept firmly on since then and within vision.

I remember serving my time in an Audi dealership in the 80s when one of my colleagues had to remove the petrol tank from an Audi 100 (plastic tank, submerged pump and no drain) so to empty the tank he decided to use an external electric fuel pump with a hose into the tank through the sender unit aperture.

So far, so good.

He then ran + and - wires from the battery, lay in the boot and connected them to the (unswitched) pump. Guess what happened next!!!!

We managed to put him out with a fire blanket and emptied every fire extinguisher in the workshop into the boot. Amazingly, he got away with badly singed hair and a few minor burns and the car just needed new boot trim and wiring.

Thinking back, running away very fast would probably have been the more sensible option!
