Got some thin tube to weld to a piece of 16mm rod, can I use aluminium as a heatsink to stop the thin tube turning into a puddle?

Sure I read somewhere about aluminium & steel being an explosive combination

ali is fine as a heatsink its probably aluminium powder and steel filings grindin you have seen

The ali and steel explosive combination you're thinking of is probably Thermite. As said ali (or copper) is fine as a heatsink
