hi my workshop is old cattle barn i am getting it all kitted out what i would like to no is what ways i could heat it?? anyone got any suggestions that are good for a large area?

How large?
A barn is going to take some serious kit to heat it properly so you might be better off with a space heater pointing at you to get some spot heating around you rather than try and heat the whole place.
Is it pretty well sealed or a typically draughty farm building?

I had a space heater in my workshop, lasted for a day before i never used it again!! Nothing wrong with it and it got everywhere nice and warm, but the next morning everything was rusted, lathe bed, chucks, mill, drill the lot. I did cover everything in oil that night as well so whether it beat me to it and i trapped it in i dont know, took a lot of cleaning up and certainly one of them learn from your mistakes moments.
But thats just my experience, we still use it in the shop where i work and it does warm the place up quite well and in a reasonable time, but as for the workshop i just layer up now and put up with it having no heating

I use a small space heater to get up to temp and then change over to a radiant for the domestic garage.
If outside or under carport then it's either the blown heater or what is better - an infrared patio heater.
If you have the option then having a tarp as a curtain to section off a smaller area that you are working is worth considering rather than heating the whole area. Same applies to vans - a simple curtain behind the driver stops heating of the load area if you haven't a fixed bulkhead and makes it a lot more snug.

its not really windy old barn its a barn but i pretty good one. well im making it into a good one. my workshop area i wanna heat is about 80ft by 80ft i recon! used a space heater before but found it used allot of diesel was just wanting to see what other options there are.
I used to have a 1500 sqft workshop on a farm, also an old cattle shed.
Even though it was windproof it was uninsulated & virtually impossible to heat.
I ended up with the mother of all stoves, a great riveted 1/2" plate iron air reciever that i cut doors in it was 30" in dia & 6ft high with an 8" chimney.
That used to chuck out some heat! it would eat great chunks of tree, sleepers, anything. In thewinter we never used to do any work as it was a full time occupation feeding the beast & drinking tea!
One day some idiot thought it would be a fun idea to throw a full tin of easy start into it & latch the door shut.
There was a terrible bang and great jets of flame shot from every orifice.
The stove door never fitted as well after that!

I run 2 diesel space heaters both at 200,000 BTUs I also have an additional 15KW 3 ph fan heater and, a 400,000btu propane, thats the general weaponry your need to heat a barn, without going to a full industrial type heater, Running a huge amount of heat for a short burst is far more effective than running a small amount all day, today after the initial heat up, the stats were set at 10C and the heaters only kicked in about 10 minutes per hour.

Was it propane? My understanding is that burning gas produces water as part of the combustion chemistry.
We're looking at a diesel space heater, with the plan of running it on cherry. Does anyone have any experience of using these - any moisture issues due to condensation, rather than the combustion process?
Yup, i think we went for that because of the cost, big big bottle(47kg i think) more or less lasts us for all we need over the winter so worked out quite cheap, never gave diesel any thought tbh so would be interested to hear people veiws on them with the moisture issues, could be my way of being warm for a change

We run a space heater in our workshop, using Kerosene. Doesnt seem to create moisture problems at all.

We had a big diesel heater in the hanger in Norfolk (80x 140ft?and around 30ft high). Only made a difference if you were close.
Any heater burning hydrocarbon fuels produces water. Either equal to the amount of fuel burned, or double that ( memory lapse) So any heater that vents into the workspace will creat humidity.
Here, my w/shops are old farm buildings and drafty, so I just wrap up and keep busy.

Propane is wet it does produce a huge amount of condensation, couple that with the expense, a 200,000 BTU heater with the reg open will easily burn 47KGs of propane in a day.
My two main heaters are fired on Diesel I paid about 54ppl last time I had the tanks filled up two heaters burn about 25L Per day if Flatt out so less than £14 in red, and around £40 in propane. I guess on a cold day today I burnt about £8 of fuel as its rare Id run the heaters continuous.
Running them on burning oil produces more heat, and a less dirty flame, however Iv got a 6000L tank of red sit in the yard so ******ing about with kerro is never going to happen.
Water and moisture from the diesel heaters is a negligible, different to propane..
The biggest drawback with these heaters is firstly there noisy secondly they will produce some fume (mind calor will when the bottles and the pressures get low) and thirdly they will require maintenance to keep them burning well.
