Heating my shed idea?

My shed is 64sq metres and has 6” of rockwool insulation all round.

Just a couple of thoughts:

What is the ceiling height? Is it a flat ceiling? Ceiling height is an important factor, partly because you need to know the volume of air to be heated, but also because of the height at which the warmed air will tend to accumulate relative to where you are standing/sitting/working. A low-ceiling space tends to be cheaper to heat.

Also, will you be using flammable/combustible materials in the shop? If so, you need to take that into account when selecting a heating unit to avoid a hazardous situation.

Worth a try that, decomposing manure and hay can self combust so certainly gets hot.

A woodstove will definitely not make the place damp, it will do the opposite. I once fitted one in a caravan to replace his gas fire, which had turned the whole place into a sopping wet sponge with condensation soaking into everything. The owner came to see me the next day with a huge grin. He said that within twenty minutes of lighting it he could feel the heat getting everywhere and virtually see everything drying out. It's a hot box drawing wet air in and expelling it through the flue while kicking out heat.

We leave the kettle on the wood stove to add moisture to the air otherwise it gets dry and not pleasant

you mentioned something outside heating a water loop...


wood burner outside to heat water, then a few radiators inside - no need for a pump let the convection of the hot water sort that out

if you have/buy/make a big wood burner you could connect ot to a tank to store the hot water too - an IBC would work? all convection fed too


are you trying to warm the place up or keep the frost/damp out?

you mentioned solar, you could dump solar power into a hot water tank via an immersion heater but then you're spending thousands on solar panels :-(

Admittedly I am not familiar with them and have never had one.

But trusting my garage heating- unattended with a Chinese diesel heater ain't going to happen!!

Some yanks have great garage stove barrel ideas with fan assistance etc on YouTube. If I had the space I'd definitely do that for when working on Saturdays etc in dead of winter.

Otherwise I think a good old condensing oil boiler or zone off the house turned away down on underfloor heating has to be best option in our climate. And little to no risk of fire inside the garage. Place the boiler outside in its own container with fire valve etc. Tools and cars protected.

not sure how anyone else's experiences are, but we used to have a wood burner in the tea room at work....

made a lot of mess, wood/ash/soot etc.

i have 2 rocket stoves both not fan assisted

they both give off 2 x 1000+f up too 1800 in a space of 700mm square, thats x2 heatput compared to a normal wood stove a downdraft stove is equivelent to this heat output but you need to use fans to distribute the heat around the stove

the heat exchanger makes the air movement so no fans are needed and only heats up the air inside of the building

this depends on how you build one

the firebox is sealed so no air goes past the door like normal wood stoves or gas or even the oil burner type

air input is through the rear from the outside

Double the output? I won’t look for it but in another thread you quoted like a 20 or 30% diff in efficiency?

you dont have to do i said secondary air stoves gives 20-30 percent efficiency a rocket stoves gives more than that as it burns the gasses off the wood

double the output is from the 2 firebox chambers it has on them

while it has 3 of them in total firebox secondary firebox and also a vortex chamber each one provides alit of heat

firebox front 100+f secondary air chamber 1500+f vortex temp hits 2000+f

the mainone we feel the heat from is the front firebox and the heat exchanger surrounding the vortex chamber

i wouldnt bother with storage heaters they may apear good but there not theres enough posts it runs out of heat or is no good even on this forum

transfer to water tank is much better or an oil tank as that can take alot more heat than water but there is issues with an oil tank to deal with

one good thing that a water tank has is you can have multiple inputs into it

so on bad days you can top up via another source of heat

A storage heater is only as good as the energy you put into it. And its insulation. If people have problems, they don't have enough heaters, or they're too leaky. I am not wrong, they are more energy dense than water. My post was correct and I do acknowledge that water is a cheap medium, even though it takes up more space.

If you had experience running a storage heater on either a wind turbine, or solar PV, you might be better placed to comment. For what it's worth, I have both.

firebox is the front box his heat exchanger is the rear unit at back

i will use loz harrops videos here

updated and he then insulates the firebox area

this stove is canada built they have alot lower temps than we do and only burns through 1 and a quarter cords of wood
loading one log in at a time after start up

same type of stove this is the 2000sq ft insulated building 6x2s

1, firebox air chamber this is 1500f+

2, the heat exchanger is off the marks of 1800f+ and no fans needed
