Heating Coming On Randomly

Have a Vaillant boiler running from a hive smart thermostat.

Keep waking up and in the morning the radiators are Luke warm.

What I did yesterday was disconnect the Hive Hub (the bit that connects to the internet) to rule out some software error or interference.
This also makes sure no weird schedule is running etc. the hive Frost protect is set to 7°C so it's not that.

I've just got up 1AM and the radiators were cool. Just got up again and the radiators are warm!

Boiler is making a hum (possibly a pump running?) but I don't think it's actually firing as there is no indication on the screen.

I checked yesterday (turning the hive on from the app) and flashing radiator symbol appears on the boiler screen when the boiler is actually running.

Any ideas?

The only other thing I can think is maybe the boiler has gone onto some sort of schedule? Or the Hive receiver/switch has gone haywire.

The hive receiver has an additional green light that seems to come on and go off when the central heating is activated from the hive app and the boiler is actually firing. That seems to be working okay.

Isolate the Hive stuff in order to check basic heating/boiler operation.

It's only 7° here and I'm slightly less rural than you.

Our's pre heats the tap water every so often through the night, so not unusual for it too run, that and maybe a stuck divert valve ?

Check your Hive schedule. It has a 'pre-heat' function which baffled me too at first.

Blocked system, air lock? Can you operate the heating without the Hive to eliminate that?

One of my oil boilers started doing odd things a few years back (totally loosing pressure) and we never could find the reason. As it heats our two holiday cottages I’ve rigged an ip camera looking at its control panel so that I can monitor it from the comfort of my bed if needed.
It’s a really rare occurrence - once or twice a year but it happened only last week. The camera means that I can talk someone through the process of recharging and make sure they are manipulating the right taps on the filling loop if I’m off site.

It's the pump. My boiler has always done that.

Found this on diynot about frost protection on a vaillent boiler - the text below is their explanation

The frost protection cycle will begin stage one at 12 degrees internal flow temperature. This will run the pump for 30 minutes and if the appliance hasn't reached 15 degrees, it will bring the burner on based off the heat impartial load output. Alternatively, should the appliance drop below 8 degrees, the burner will come on until the boiler reaches 35 degrees internally, this would be stage two. The diverter valve will sit in mid position during this, so heat should go through both the plate heat exchanger and down the heating flow pipe. It is not designed to protect the pipework / system, only the boilers internals.

Mine does this now and again.
The 3-way valve gets stuck and the hot water from the hot water tank ends up circulating into the radiators.

It's only 7° here and I'm slightly less rural than you.

My froststat is adjustable from. 3° to 10°. Heating kept coming on at random, turned out the stat was faulty and switched at 10°c. Boiler is in the garage.

I don't think you have said if its a combi or not?
If its got a hot water cylinder, tyhen its probably what hotponyshoes says above.

it will be your hive system not your boiler as above with the frost stat cycling on them

I have a Vaillant combo and it has just started switching the heating on randomly, It's out of warranty (naturally) so had the local guy service it as it was due and mentioned it to him. He said it was a known fault with the type model I have (ecotec pro 28). the manufactures recommend fitting a remote control for the heating etc as the switch on the panel becomes faulty (worn). I've never used the timer, only the manual switch on the panel. Different model to yours Though.

Not sure? House hasn't dropped below about 16 though so I doubt it unless the internal stat is faulty.
