if the backside of 3/8 plate after welding is glowing red is this too much heat into the base metal my settings were 22-23v and 440ipm also tried lap joint and just burned away top edge any suggestion would be helpful

Try travelling faster, one of the main reasons for MIG welds failing is people either travelling too slow or weaving to build the size of the weld up, they seem to think that a bigger weld is stronger

just trying to figure out proper amount of and too much but i supose if if the puddle speads wide enough for what i'm doing its probaly ok example if i ran a bead on 3/8 plate to check my settings slightly larger than 3/8 in width and no more 1/8 in high would be good right and i guess if i get undercut or improper filling at the top of a lap joint i probaly should drop my angle more towards the bottom plate right also do you jam the wire right in the corner or slightly before ?
