Probably a stupid question but is it normal to see less heat blueing on zintec sheet with mig than on untreated bright steel sheet? Wasn’t sure if settings need to be raised for zintec?
Yea it's normal. The zinc protects the metal from exposure to the atmosphere so less colouration.
But the fumes from burning zinc are nasty and aside from hurting you they will mess up the welding tips/shrouds and I have also heard that they can do damage to electronics when they get sucked in the welder via the fan.
So really you want to get rid of any surrounding the weld zone before welding.
just wasn’t sure if it was something I was doing wrong! I always clean back around 15-20mm from all weld edges anyway even on plug welds, I thought that maybe the new steel might have been either a better or less quality beneath the zinc coating.
I’m welding outside with a 4mtr torch line so should be ok with the fumes damaging myself & the machine, but with nearly 40yrs in the shopfitting & construction game my lungs are blocked with every other hazardous concoction any way, but on a serious note I know the implications welding & cutting zinc & galvanised metal.
