PTFE tape can also be used as a temporary short-term solution to help seal plumbing leaks until further work can be carried out. It is generally applied to a joint's exterior to minimise further leakage. However, it is not designed to be a long-term measure for fixing degraded, damaged, or incorrectly fitted joints.

Can't say I've ever seen anyone try this with plumbers tape . . . although my sister, according to the messages she was sending me, did I pointed her in the direction of self-amalgamating tape for her leaking basin drain. I guess it will be a temporary fix for the next couple of decades . . .

That is kind of what I was getting at, if that bit is glaringly wrong how can anyone rely on the rest of the info in the article?

Plus self amalgamating tape is surely a proper fix

I suspect that many people think PTFE tape is right for parallel threads, but it's only really right for tapered fittings. You may get a seal with tape on parallel fittings... or you may not.

Pure PTFE is certainly ok for use with fuels/lubricants. We used to use it on fittings with 99% nitric acid and various other reactive chemicals

Sealant seems to work regardless of thread type – and helps stop stainless fitting galling.

Sealant and tape will hold over 25 bar of water with BSP fittings screwed into NPT fittings with a pair of stilsons . . . I wouldn’t recommend it, but I was in a pit somewhere in the US having a sense of humour failure 25 yrs ago. I was fairly sure I wouldn’t be the one undoing it . . .

Funniest thing with tape is watching people wind it on the wrong way . . . and they keep on doing it . . . I took pity on an apprentice once, and explained which way to wind it . . . he looked at me as though I was crazy . . . and wound it on wrong again . . .

Yup ^^^ both the direction that you wind it on the fitting, as well as the direction it comes off the little spool,
keeps everything neat & tidy.

Spool on your Index finger, middle to steady it. Hold it on the thread with your thumb to start.

right guys, first off thanks to all for the suggestions and replys, i must be an idiot, infact i know i am, put ptfe tape round the switch last night, been out in the car today and it had leeaked again, so just before tea i thought i go try the new oil switch again, and it screwed all the way in by hand till it got to the washer, then used a spanner to nip it up, no cross threading like i thought it was yesterday, its fairly tight, a hell of a lot tighter than the old one was before it was jumping threads, could use ya fingers on the old one it would nip up slightly then slip, but the new one doesnt, so yeah i am an idiot, it was me that was putting it in on the **** abit for it to feel cross threaded.
