Heat protection

Hi guy's, I have a set of Land Rover doors to weld. They have a steel frame with Ali outer skins. I have to repair some of the steel frame but the Ali is very brittle around the edges so I don't want to try and take them off or go through the process of annealing the Ali.

So my question is, is there anything that I could slide between the frame and Ail to protect the Ali from melting or distorting while working on the frame?

it's not alloy it's called birmabright repair sections are available try paddocks or craddocks or look in lro mag
only way is to peel the skin back or replace it you could try peeling the skin back and then sliding in a sheet of steel while you weld it there is some paste that stops heat transfer no idea of a name sure someone will know it

For all practical purposes Birmabright is just a 5 series aluminium / magnesium alloy, uk designation is NS4, nothing special, it can be easily welded using 5356 filler rods or mig wire,
To the op's question, I have had to do similar repairs when I worked on restorations, a thin sheet of copper (a piece of water pipe slit and rolled flat will do) slipped between the ally and the steel frame will help and a mate standing by with a compressed air gun to air quench the weld and the surrounding area, weld in very short bursts and cool straight away, its likely though that the back side of the material against the ally skin is pretty corroded and will cause problems with welding, you won't know until you try. sometimes the only way is to strip the door skin and do the job properly.

i took the skin off mine when i repaired it. then you can see the state of rust on the mating surfaces, repair it and tiger glue the whole thing back together to stop more water getting in that gap and rusting the frame and ali.
