Heat penetration pic...

I found this picture on my computer it was taken during my first weld project and one of the first welds i had done with the portamig 185.
I like this pic because it shows the colour blue mauve n brown from the heat transfer
The metal dowel was welded onto a 10mm thick flat plate to make a hinge for my gate.

It's not heat penetration as such. It's an oxide layer forming as the metal cools. This is very useful on heat treatment of tool and other alloy steels. The thickness of the oxide layer produced lessens as the heat is spread up the pin as you can see. It's very common when the steel is clean and allowed to cool in air. Just like on the top of most tig welds.

some 316 trays I did today with some 1mm filler and a bit of pulse.
