So, having bought a camcorder with an HDMI output I thought it would be a good idea to use a spare monitor with it.

I find an "HDMI to VGA" cable on Ebay and buy it but it doesn't work.

Looking at the specs for VGA and HDMI the former is analogue and the latter digital, so there is no way a cbale can be made to connect the two without electronic gubbins in between - or am I missing something (apart from three quid for the cable!)

I'm afraid you're right. You'll need a converter/transcoder to make the cable work.

It makes you wonder why they make the cable in the first place - it certainly looks well made (assuming there are actually conductor inside!)

IIRC, HDMI is analog and digital (like DVI).

Most likely your camera does not support analog output. I would not fault the cable.

I've sent the guy an Email so we'll see what he has to say.

I've had a read through this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI and can't find anything to help this particular problem, bit I got a bit bleary-eyed after the 1st paragraph!

I've just got a free hdmi cable with my phone, dont know how to use it yet so it may go on ebay soon.
i havent got a fancy hd tv or anything so i may never use it!
i havent even worked out how to use the phone yet

That sounds backwards.

That's what I thought, have asked for clarification!

The guy who sold me the cable says you need an adaptor if using it from a PC or Laptop, but that sounds like using it convert VGA to HDMI.

Yep, didn't read the quote properly. The item I have is VGA out to HDMI in. Not suitable.
