In fairness, there seems to have been a lot of accidents lately, when was the last one ? Only a week or two back.

There seems to be at least 1 or 2 fatal crashes every show season...dont know iff its air craft over stretched on its capabilitys mixed with age or pilots showboating a little too far that causes it but its never a nice sight to see
. RIP todays victims.

thats what can happen when u fly to the edge of the envelope unfortunately. ive seen 2 microlite crashes in a competition and i totaled a hanglider flying fast and low in a speed competition crashing in to the forrest below after clipping a treetop with one wing

There seem to be several, some of the comments are [expletives deleted] unbelievable. If people shot their mouths off like that in a pub there would be bodily injury.

Shoreham is by the sea and I would imagine that most flying does take place over the sea. Trouble is the aircraft have to pass over land on take off and landing.
Is the problem that some of these old aircraft are in private hands and not maintained to the high standards of military of civil aviation jets?

I drove past there on Friday afternoon on the a27, can't imagine the devastation caused. The bbc footage shows the aftermath of the crash from the road and it looks horrific.
Even though shoreham is by the sea most of the display takes place over the airfield otherwise no one would be able to see it!

I was told:-
Flaps are not hinged. They cant be move up or down. When deployed they increase surface area of the wing thus increasing the lift. They are deflected down to increase the effective curvature of the wing.
You are perhaps thinking of the elevators which ARE hinged and which move up when the stick is drawn back and down when the stick is pushed forward.
Looking at the attitude of the aircraft they would have been pretty useless as there was little forward speed compared to vertical speed so the airflow over the top is unlikely to have provided enough lift to make any difference.
