afternoon all.

just had to spend some time under the car, and it really made me wish I had a lift...

no space for a lift though, so I got thinking, has any one made a jack that is positioned on the wheel?

in my mind I can see a rectangular frame that fits around the tyre, a scissor action with a 2 tonne hydraulic jack fitted, 4 in total (one for each wheel) all connected to one hydraulic pump so they all elevate at the same rate/time.

now, you jack the car, or drive onto the frames if possible, and then use these 4 jacks to lift all 4 corners to a suitable height where you can put it on stands, or even leave it on the jacks if you can provide a good fail safe incase a pipe splits under load.

I can see this being very handy, and if you need to remove a wheel you can just replace that corner with an axel stand in the relevant place.

this would provide a level car to work on, plenty of space underneath to lay comfortably and manoeuvre around and just generally make life easier.

anyone seen anything similar to this before?

Well I should be able to make them for about 180 so think will have a play on cad

Why not just make some of those seesaw ramps. The ones you see so often on car dealers forecourts. No moving parts, just drive on past the fulcrum point and the back end comes up level.

i have made jack extensions but only use them on solid level ground and the jack is substantial not some flimsy cheap crap .jack up in stages and use large axle stands at every lift

i had thought of that, i also have the adapter that turns a trolley jack into a 2 point jack so you can lift using both jacking points on one side, but find it crap and flimsy. never feels safe.

i want something that lets me lift all 4 corners at once, similar motion to a lift.

at the moment my trolley jack wont lift the car high enough to get my stands in place

so do i, but at 400 quid a pair, and i need 2 pairs.

using a mix of 4mm wall box for the non weight bearing bits and 20mmx20mm solid bar for the weight bearing bits i can make 4 (including jacks) for around 210.

it was 180 but i forgot a few bits of round bar for safety pins and pivots

Why do you need two pairs? Lift one end axle stand then do the other end (unless they have a stop on them you will need to axle stand anyway)

That's something I have been thinking of for a year or so, every time I have to get under I am jacking each corner and placing stands and then doing it all again several times to get it higher as the trolley jack runs out of throw and I have to put it on blocks.
Can you do it with pictures mate so we can follow the build please?

Plus side of having a landrover is there is plenty of room for standard work to be done. Other plus side is you get a long travel jack so normal cars are along way in air that's also needed to defeat travel in 2cv suspension

well, i own a defender, although it is still no where near being brought down yet, but i drive a megane, and its not lowered, but the jacking points are all quite low.

when i get round to this i will do a full project thread showing all stages of the build.

am half way through a cad design (haven't done anything in 3d for a while so having to re-learn it all)

It is a chore working on cars and lifting them on a regular basis without a lift, I have a combination of jacks accumulated over the years and probably the most useful of them is this one from Machine Mart. The additional lift height makes a big difference and the real bonus for speed is the fast lift foot pedal which will lift small cars using the pedal alone. The foot pedal is also useful for manouvering the jack around by lifting the front wheels off the ground and pivotig on the rear castors.
