I've spotted this for sale locally.

Can I ask advise from the wise heads on here?
It's advertised at £150 which seems like a decent price but it will need converted to single phase.
What way are these driven - is it a motor in the base with belts to the spindle?
Is there much room for an alternative motor?
This is set up for polishing - is it difficult to convert it to grinding?

The head is the motor I believe. You'll need a VFD or other type of 3-phase converter.

The motor is at the bottom and it runs belt to the top shaft, there are some clues because of the plate in the bottom right hand hand indicates there is a large access which is needed for something large. A lot of the old gear like this, viceroy, denford, union etc are this configuration.

Agreed. The machine plate lists motor speed and spindle speed amd pulley speed separately.

its debatable whether a single phase motor will fit in as 3 phase ones are smaller .having said that modern motors are smaller than the old ones

Harrison made both grinders and polishers, they seem to be uncommon compared to their lathes which are much more plentiful. The price is good, if it were me I would buy it.

I've spent two years tracking one down - machines are hard to find here, though there seems to be a 'one of everything' rule so your efforts are never in vain!

I converted on a bit like this once. Went from grinder to polisher.
Was just a case of swapping the 2 pulley wheels around to half the speed and double the tourque. You could take the sizes from your wheels and see if they will swap over?
Or maybe able to find some replacements although you might need a new belt if you do that?

I left the motor alone on mine. As mentioned above a converter would work. You could get one with rpm control if you wanted. If I was wiring one up I would fit a foot switch at the same time.

I'm very strapped for cash as I had to buy new springs for my car so I might have to leave this until after xmas. It was advertised back in September & didn't sell, I guess there's a limited market for this especially with it being 3 phase.

When you get yours can you tell me what kw/hp the motor is, the motor plate on this one is hard to read in the photo, looks like 1.5kw. Because the starting load is low it might be a candidate for using a capacitor to supply a dummy phase and run it on 240v.

If it ever arrives I will gladly do so. Sick of jumping up every time I hear a heavy engine near the house!

I plan on doing it with an inverter drive. As they're much easier to get hold of though I like to buy the machine before the switchgear and lock in the project. Mine looks like it needs a tidy up anyway, so ample time to get it in shape.

An inverter drive would work quite well, especially if you wanted to use one side for polishing & the other for grinding. Speed control would also be useful for sharpening drills & lathe tools.

Think it's got water feed too. This would be excellent for chisels and plane blades with one of those fine white wheels.

I can't make out the full ID of this machine but since it begins with 16, it's made between 1979-82. Mine is from 1955!
